After having an amazing Poker week in Vegas ((Our) Vegas Poker Tour) we

nk we h

understood how we should h

pl

d the

fessional tournaments and we would like to hear your opinion ab

it.
We

talking

e ab

the $120 tournament and up ($330, $540, $1080) w

e a pl

r wont

l you

h no

ng (e.g.

ling an AI

h K2 preflop in the 2nd hand of a tournement...).
When you

a decent basketball pl

r and you try and take Michael Jordan 1 on 1, you'll lose (not in 99% of the cases, but in 100% of the cases!!) howe

, the beautiful

ng in Poker is that if you're a decent Poker pl

r, you could take

Daniel Negranou in a tournament!!
We h

pl

d the tournaments trying to eliminate the luck factor and enhancing the skill factor. We know it's ab

65% skill-35% luck assuming one actually has skill. So, we pl

d rat

t

t and bluffed only 10%-20% of the hands. We r

ly got caught due to our t

t image that we had, people believed us and most of the

e folded. Howe

, even if we ended up deep in the tournament and even when we made it to the final table, we w

always short stacked - Always!
Analyzing the tournaments made us understand we're doing some

ng wrong. Watc

g the

s made us understand what is the r

t way to play, still, we wonder if it is really the r

t way.
We now

nk that these tournaments should be pl

d

y aggressively and thus, one has to h

the bank roll to play it as such. The

s who live in Vegas,

counting on the fact that touristavg. pl

rs who

coming to Vegas c

a lot ab

their money and will not

l a

y h

bet preflop unless its a super strong hand (i.e. QQ and up). So, when they see 4 or 5 pl

rs limping and they h

position they

sing to 6-7

es BB (instead of the 'standard 3BB or 3.5BB) and make e

yone fold 80% of the

es. In the remaining 20% they will bet anot

6-7

es BB no matter what comes

assuming the the

ler has hit no

ng. In 80% of the cases they will be r

t and in the remaining 20% the

ler will hit some

ng but will

nk four

es before

ling the 2nd huge

se. In r

cases, when the poor tourist will hit a set he will

l... and then it m

t come

to a show down and in 20% of the cases the

will suck

a victory.... anyway, he has him completely cov

d so the

wasn't hurt too much.
If the

pl

r has no position but has a nice potential hand (e.g. A9s, K,10s or even 9,Js) he will do the 'regular' 6-7 BB

se hope not to h

any

lers (

s will be the case 80% of the

es) and for the few

lers he will bet 6-7 BB after the flop and in 80% of the cases the

lers will fold due to hitting no

ng.
Playing like that all the

e will get any pl

r to the final table

h a nice stack of chips and a real chance to win the tournament in 30% to 40% of the games.
If the 20% x 20% actually happen and the

is

of the tournament that is fine as t

e is always the option to register the next one. Playing like that 10 tournaments will get one loaded

h chips to the final table in at least 3 tournaments (

of the 10) which will make the whole affair

fitable.
The "lo

s" in Vegas h

the luxury of being able to hit the table again tomorrow or even next week. The "tourist" doesn't h

that luxury and wants to continue the experience for as long as they can. Its the diff

nce between playing to win and playing to just play.
This is one reason I won't play NL ring games in Vegas because the "lo

s" like to grab a table

h a big stack and shove the "tourists" around

h huge bets because they know a) Tourists

loose, and b) Tourists play

h sc

d money.
I'm not sure if being hyper-aggressive is the r

t strategy. Howe

, playing a solid t

t-aggressive game and having the skills push back on the 7X

ses

h good cards will get you to that final table in good shape. You now recognize the style. Its

e to capitalize on it. Its like playing micro-limit SnG's on the net. You h

to recognize that a 3X BB

se will not be respected from any position, particularly in the early stages of the tournament.
Well, the lo

s

s as they

all playing Poker for a living. T

e

s better than ot

but they

all

s.
T

e w

also

s from ot

places in the world (mainly the UK) that came to Vegas and pl

d

h us and we h

nessed the same aggressive game play from them, which paid off most of the

es in the long run.
I

nk its a combination of a few factors

e;
First, setting a h

price for

y good hands (7-8 BB)
Second, recognizing limpers or small

ses when we h

position and

se a lot more no matter what cards we h

. Then,

se a lot no matter what the flop is. In most cases you will then take that hand as people will be af

d of the monster hand you h

due to

sing pre and post flop.
Third, setting a h

price for marginal hands and hopefully get folds or lucky on the showdown.
Next

e we go to Vegas (whene

s maybe) we'll try

s strategy o

10 tournaments and see if it works.
