Poker is a fun card game that has been around for many years. The game of Poker requires a great amount of concentration and skill as well as a bit of luck.
It is difficult to know the exact origin of the game of Poker, but many believe that it was invented by the Chinese before 969 A.D. While the game of Poker may have originated in China, Egypt, Persia, France, Germany, and Canada also helped popularize the game.
In France in particular, “poque” as Poker was called, was the national card game of France beginning in the 18th century. In the United States, Poker was first played in New Orleans. While Poker began in one form or another as a basic game with simple rules, Poker has expanded into a card game phenomenon. There are now four basic categories of Poker games including Hold’em, Stud, Draw, and Guts.


These four categories of Poker encompass over 90 different variations of the game of Poker. With so many game variations, it’s a wonder that any of the variations have arose as “popular” in today’s society. The most popular type of Poker in the world today is Texas Hold’em which is considered the Cadillac of Poker since the 1970’s.


Other popular variations of poker include 5 Card Draw, 7 Card Stud, Omaha, Stud Poker, Manila, Draw Poker, and Razz. As Poker has gained in popularity, so has the popularity of Poker tournaments and championships. The biggest Poker tournament in the world is World Series of Poker which is considered the Super Bowl of the Poker industry. Other popular tournaments include WSOP Europe, World Poker Tour, European Poker Tour, Aussie Millions, Irish Open, Asia Pacific Poker Tour, and Latin American Poker Tour.


In addition to tournaments, electronic Poker in the form of Internet Poker and Video Poker have gained in popularity. Video Poker began in 1979, and throughout the 1980’s it gained in popularity and began to fill casinos. People started to turn to Video Poker instead of traditional table game poker because they found Poker dealers intimidating. Video Poker is based on a popular variation of Poker known as Five Card Draw Poker.
As the Internet has become increasingly popular, online Poker has increased in popularity along with it. Poker Stars, Party Poker, and Full Tilt Poker have emerged as the leading web sites that deliver online poker experiences to players.
