In Texas Hold'em, having a good starting hand gives you greater chances of winning. What a good hand is composed of, however, depends greatly on where you're positioned at the table.

Best Online Poker Hands

The best online poker hand to have in Texas Hold'em is, hands down, a pair of aces and which is also known occasionally as pocket rockets and American Airlines. A pair of kings, also referred to as King Kong or cowboys, is almost as good and the third best starting hand would be a pair of queens or ladies, as they say.

Different hands jockey for the fourth and fifth position, but it would be safe to say that many will agree to at least acknowledge the importance of a suited ace-king, also known as big slick, and a suited ace-queen, also known as big chick or little slick.

Whatever your position is at the table, having any of these hands is certainly a terrific weapon against your opponents.

Worst Online Poker Hands

Position likewise has no bearing when you have the worst online poker hands. The worst starting hand would be an off suit 2 and 7 since it offers you terribly few options to choose from, and not so good ones at that!

Other bad starting hands that you should pray not to be cursed having are off suit 2-8, 3-8, 2-9, and 2-6.

Good Online Poker Starting Hands at Early Position

Being one of the first to play, and especially when you're task to pay the big or small blind, forces you to be more selective than usual with which hands to play. If you don't have any of the best starting hands mentioned earlier on, having a pair of jacks or tens might also suffice. The flop will later on let you know whether you could still push through with your hand or not.

Good Online Poker Starting Hands at Middle Position

The first thing to do is consider how the players before you acted. How many players have folded? How many entered the pot? Who went for a raise and who opted to check? Middle position players have more possible hands to play than those at early position. Middle position players also have greater opportunities to raise the bet even at pre-flop.

The best starting hands for middle position players include pairs of nines and eights as well as a suited or even off suit ace-jack. Having a jack-ten or queen-jack would be good if two or more people had already entered the pot. A suited nine-ten would be alright if five or more people already entered the pot.

Good Online Poker Starting Hands at Late Position

Being one of the last to play lets you raise the bet for just about anything. An ace-rag would be adequate. Small pairs are playable but make sure to limp in if there are five to six players still gunning for the pot. Other suited connectors like an eight-ten might also have be worth fighting with but only if there are more than six players still active at the table.
