Poker is a game that has been played for many years. Back in the old times, you could legally kill a person accused of cheating! It was and still is a great source of wealth for some. Poker has gone from a game played in saloons and cat houses at the turn of the century to online betting and handheld electronic games that you can play whenever you feel.
Although the medium poker exists has changed drastically, the principal remains the same. In poker, the best hand is the best ranked hand. A royal flush, consisting of the ten through ace cards in a particular suit is the highest of accomplishments in the poker world, closely followed by four of a kind, a straight flush, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two of a kind, high card, and last but not least the ultimate ability to bluff your opponents and take the winnings.
Usually at the beginning of each hand you must place an anti into the pot. This assures that there will be some sort of winnings. If you don’t feel your first two cards will get you anywhere, folding is welcome. There are many variations of poker that are played. Texas Hold’em is a very popular game where everyone receives two cards, and there are five community cards for everyone. Winner is the one with the best combination of cards from his/her hand and the table. Bluffing is also encouraged. Omaha is a variation of hold’em where everyone receives four cards in their hand and five more are laid out as community cards. The players must use two cards from the four in their hand and three from the table to make the best hand. Again, bluffing is encouraged.
Cincinnati is where every player receives five cards. Five more cards are laid on the table as community cards. Winner is the one with the best combination from five cards in hand and five cards on the table. Bluffing is strongly encouraged. The fun part about Cincinnati is that a “boat” or full house is a very common hand. Unfortunately a full house when playing Cincinnati is a very low hand. Winners need straight flushes or four of a kind usually to win this game. That is one aspect that makes it fun.
Money is another issue with poker. In Hold’em style games like the ones just described, everyone gets their cards and bets. Then you see the flop, or the first three community cards. Another round of betting takes place. Next comes the turn, or the fourth community card. More betting then comes the river, or the fifth and last community card is shown. The last round of betting and bluffing ensues. Soon, only one person will have the rights to the pot. These are just some variations of poker that are played quite frequently.
