Harrah's Atlantic City featured the fourth leg of the 2009 World Series of Poker Circuit Tournament series. The 14 events in the tournament were played from December 5 to December 18, 2008 and had 4,907 players compete for a piece of a combined final prize pool that reached $3,046,300 USD. One good reason to follow the WSOP circuit tournaments throughout the year is to see top local and regional players make their presence known to the overall poker world. The big names in the game are mostly seen at the Championship events on the circuit, and the three day #10 Championship Main Event at Harrah's in Atlantic City was no different. Here is what took place:
Day 1 -- At 12 noon tournament director John Arthur gave to order to shuffle up and deal, and with that 179 players got underway to see who the new champion would be here at Harrah's Atlantic City. Each participant paid a buy in of $5,150 which resulted in a pool of $867,000 USD. Payouts went to the top 18 in the event. The winner received $280,940, a incredible gold and diamond ring plus a $10,000 entry into the 2009 WSOP Main Event when it takes place in Las Vegas at the RIO. Defending champion John Racener was in the field as was Eugene Todd, Bill Gazes, superbowl champion quarterback Jim McMahon, Brett Jungblut, Dan Shak, Will "The Thrill" Failla, Chris Reslock, John Spadavecchia and Doug "Rico" Carli. All players began with a stack of 20,000 chips.
Busted in today's play were Eugene Todd when his pocket 3's lost to the Ace high flush of another player, quarterback star Jim McMahon, defending champion John Racener when his set of Queens lost to the straight of his opponent and Rick Rosetti who won this event in 2006. By the end of Day 1 there were 35 players who bagged their chips for tomorrows round.
Day 2 -- Action got underway at 2:00 PM and Dan Shak went out in the first 15 minutes of play as his all-in move with paired Jacks lost to an opponent who made paired Kings. John Spadavecchia went to the rail after his push to the middle with pocket J's lost to the two pair (6's and 5's) of Dwyte Pilgrim. Dwyte Pilgrim continued to have fortune on his side to make the final table.
Those who did not make the cut include Sirous Jamendi, Bill Gazes who after a showdown with K 9 lost to the paired Aces his opponent made by the river, Chris Reslock when his Ah Qh lost to the two pair (8's and 9's) of Kyle Bowker and Matt Matros who finished in 12th place. In just over 6 hours, the final table was established with the remaining 9 coming back one final time to see who becomes champion.
Day 3 Final Table -- Cards were in the air just past 2:00 PM and the first bust was Rafael Camejo in 9th when his A Q lost to the paired Kings of Robert McLaughlin. Next was Scott Zakheim in 8th after being stonewalled by the two pair (4's and 3's) of Brent Roberts. Dwyte Pilgrim finished in 7th when his all-in with pocket 7's were upstaged by the pocket 8's of Allen Bari. Tim Kelly then followed in 6th place, losing to the pocket J's of Kyle Bowker. Then Allen Bari ended his quest in 5th place when his pocket 4's lost to the two pair (A's and K's) of Kyle Bowker. Robert McLaughlin went away in 4th after the flush he made with the Jack of diamonds lost to the bigger flush made by Kyle Bowker who had the Ace of diamonds. Then Kyle was busted in 3rd losing to the flush hand made by Phillip Reed.
On the last hand for the title between Phillip Reed and Brent Roberts, there was a raise and call with both players seeing a flop of 9c 8d Ks. After a raise and re raise, Reed goes all-in (Js Qd) and was immediately called by Roberts (8s 9d). With a turn card of 2s and a river card of 5d, the two pair (8's and 9's) held up and made Brent Roberts the new champion of this circuit tournament event.
