A casino can be defined as a venue where the certain types of gambling activities take place. Usually a casino can be found near hotels, restaurants, retail shopping, cruise ships and other tourist attractions. Five-star hotels commonly have casinos combined with them. In some casinos, people can find some entertainment events like stand-up comedy, concerts and sporting events too. Online casino is the internet version of this casino and their turnover is overtaking the traditional casinos.
The original meaning of the word "Casino" is small villa or summerhouse or pavilion for the purpose of having pleasure. During the 17th century, one of the first known casinos was started in Venice. It is in 19th century, that the term "casino" was applied to buildings gambling and sports took place. There are few casinos which were not used for gambling activities like Copenhagen Casino in Denmark and Hanko Casino in Finland. In America, the casinos were formerly known as saloons. The saloons were the common place for gathering of the people. At that time, four major cities namely; New Orleans, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco greatly contributed to the existence of the saloons.
During the beginning of the 20th century, gambling was banned in America and casinos had to almost close shop. In 1931, the scenario was completely changed when Nevada State legalized the gambling and hence Las Vegas City became the heaven of gambling. Usually in US, the people of age 18 years and above are allowed in casinos. In other parts of the world, it ranges from 16-21 years.
There are many gambling games that are offered in a casino such as slot machines, craps, roulette, baccarat, blackjack, poker and others. In casinos, the games are designed in such a way that the casino always has the advantages over the players. There are some terms which are commonly used in a casino like house edge, rake, payout, playing with house money and comps etc.
